Artist Statement
Ephemeral and democratic, our work features contemporary slogans on old pennies which are carefully placed in their environment, offering (sometimes) a thought-provoking, intimate interaction for the finder. Each penny is documented in its location with a photograph which becomes part of the artwork.
Words are important to us and we often explore the limitations and abuse of language itself in our work. Our love of the vernacular can be often be seen on the pennies. We think of our pennies as individual, quiet voices in a loud environment.
The pennies are often donated to us and we use a variety of techniques, including signwriting, stamping, collaging and gilding with gold leaf. We custom-make our own frames taking moulds from vintage finds and casting them in resin.
We are interested in ‘drifting’, ambling and meandering in our environment and the emotions we might experience on an unplanned journey. Placing a painted penny here or there, for someone else to stumble upon.
